THE CALL OF THE COUNTRY

$45.00

The country life is Matthew’s passion and this particular composition is inspired by his property Tienyah near Tamworth in North West NSW. The work intends to capture the experience of leaving the city behind, arriving in the country, and being overcome by the natural wonders, the sense of endless space, the peace and stillness, and the quiet pace of life.

The poem “The Call of the Bush” by New Zealand poet Dora Wilcox captures this experience perfectly. The choral work reflects the variety of nuances and changing moods in Dora Wilcox’s poem. A wealth of contrasting textures are featured including interlocking hocket sections, moments of rhythmic and pitch unison to draw attention to key passages in the text and chorale passages with long sustained, slow moving phrases decorated with bell-like sonorities in the soprano voices.

This performance features the PLC Armidale Senior Choir conducted by Matthew Minter with accompanist Li Ling Chen.
